Andrew Pleninger, Founder and Vice PresidentAndrew Pleninger formed Urban Forestry, LLC in 2000 to provide urban forestry and arboricultural consulting services to communities and clients in western New York. It is one of the only urban forestry consulting firms in New York. His skills, experience and expertise are in arboriculture, and planning and management of large populations of trees.
Prior to forming Urban Forestry, LLC Pleninger was City Forester for the City of Rochester, NY for 10 years. In the 1980's he worked commercial arboriculture and landscaping and received a B.S. in Natural Resource Management concentrating in Urban Forestry from Colorado State University.

Urban Forestry LLC.Mr. Pleninger has authored a number of articles on tree management, and directed or managed urban forest management projects such as:

  • As a City Forester, responsible for the management, maintenance and protection of 72,000 public trees
  • Managed the restoration of the City of Rochester's urban forest after the devastation caused by a Federal Disaster ice storm in 1991.
  • Developed the City of Rochester's first urban forestry master plan and comprehensive street tree planting plans.
  • Cooperator and co-author of several research projects related to ice storm damage to trees and management.
  • President of the New York State Urban & Community Forestry Council 2003-2006. During his term he led the completion of a state wide survey of communities urban forest management needs, development of a strategic plan and increased state funding for urban forestry needs.
  • As a consultant, he has assisted numerous communities improve their urban forest management by conducting inventories, developing management plans and general management services.

Mr. Pleninger is recognized nationally for his expertise, having consulted with many local, state and regional governments on industry matters ranging from urban forest management to storm restoration. He has also authored numerous articles on tree management.

Christopher J. Luley, Ph.D., Vice PresidentChristopher J. Luley, Ph.D joined Urban Forestry LLC in the fall of 2004. He brings a wide scope of technical expertise and experience in urban forest management and research, advanced diagnostics and pest management, training and education, tree risk assessment and treatments for use in advanced plant health care.

Prior to joining Urban Forestry, Dr. Luley was a technical advisor and urban forestry consultant for 14 years with two major northeast tree care and consulting companies. He also was State Forest Pathologist for Missouri and managed the Plant Diagnostic Clinic for Iowa State University. His graduate degrees are in forest pathology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse and Iowa State University.

Dr. Luley has published over 30 technical articles and given presentations on a wide range of urban forestry and pathology topics. He has been the principal investigator or project manager for a number of large urban forest management projects such as:

  • Project Manager and Quality Control Manager for the Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program in New York City in 2002 and 2004
  • Investigation of root damage and linden mortality at the Statue of Liberty National Park
  • Quality Control Manager at the United States Capitol Visitor Center Construction Project
  • Principal Investigator of the Impact of Pruning on Branch Failures in the City of Rochester, NY
  • Investigation of the Potential to Integrate Urban Forest Management into Federal Programs to Reduce Ground Level Ozone in New York City.
  • Development of a Storm Damage Assessment Protocol for the USDA Forest Service
  • Project Manager for the preservation of the 300 year-old Balmville tree
  • International Tree Failure Database Implementation Plan

Jerry Bond, Vice PresidentJerry Bond joined Urban Forestry LLC in the fall of 2007. He brings a broad range of exerience and skills, as well as a record of important professional publications. His specialities include i-Tree, training workshops, risk assessment, abiotic diagnosis, storm damage, biomechanics and computer applications.

Prior to joining Urban Forestry, Jerry was a consulting urban forester for 7 years with a major northeast tree care and consulting company. He also served as Community Forester within the Cornell Cooperative Extension system. His graduate degree in urban horticulture is from Cornell University, where his master's research centered on tree nutrition.
